Southern India plays a role the moment it is inhabited and recorded through history. How early the south was inhabited is still something to be found out. The (proto-)Vedic Culture started in NE-Uttar Pradesh after a Glacial period (it seems to be the last great one, though we have had some Minor Glacial periods).

Which non- or proto-Vedic people did live in South-India is a big question. As far as the documents go, no non-Vedic people is mentioned. (The R�kshasa and Yaksha community were living on some island).
