Dear Vishal, Here some additional remarks: K�mboja Aupamanyava is a descendant of Rshi Upamanyu Vasishtha, probably the brother of Dhaumya Aapoda, but an offspring not son. K�mboja means belonging to Kamboja, that can be the name of the father or the placename. As his Guru is named as Madragara, it is more probably a hint that Kamboja is the placename indication. The period in which this K�mboja Aupamanyava lived is the early Kuru-Brahmana Period. The Aupamanyava Vasishthas were more in the Kuru country of Aarksha Bharatas and some in the Panjab to learn from king Ashvapati Kekaya, an Ushinara-Anava. This period which started with Parikshit I Kauravya, but was started politically with his forefather king Samvarana recovering Hastinapura from Sindhu areas with the help of a Vasishtha (Suvarchas?) and maybe also the Surya people to which queen Tapati belonged. We have an eastern Ayodhya and Mithila (where the Yajnavalkyas are situated, named in the Vasishtha pravaras) and two Bharata communties: The Kurus in Kurukshetra and the Srnjaya-Panchala Bharatas in western UP. The Panchalas had their group of great learned men, like Uddalaka Aruni Gautama. The Kurus had their group with mainly Bhargavas (Shaunaka) and Vasishthas like Pr�chiinsh�la Aupamanyava, Indradyumna Bh�llaveya and Budila Aashvatar�shvi, who went to Panchala to meet Aruni. The Panjab was the place where the Ushinara-Anu Aryas were, like the Kekayas and the Madras. Pr�chiinsh�la Aupamanyava was the pupil of king Ashvapati Kekaya. Even Mah�sh�la J�b�la (same as Satyak�ma or father of his?) is an Aupamanyava, according to a phrase in Shatapatha Brahmana 10-6-1-6: Atha hov�cha mah�sh�lam j�b�lam. Aupamanyava = and he thus spoke to Mahashala Jabala: Oh Aupamanyava! K�mboja Aupamanyava is from this same family. And he moved possibly to the neighboring Kamboja region in NW-Panjab. The Kambojas are in the northwestern area, just like the Madras. The Madras belong to the Ushinara-Anu branche and are situated in that period between the Sindhu and Vitasta. But probably also the Kambojas, especially when they're far later associated with the Persians (an Anava tribe). The UttaraMadras must have been offshoots of the Panjabi Madras, out of which came the later Irani tribes. When mentioned in the Aitareya Brahmana, these Uttara tribes were somewhere in Kashmir, settled down in the warmer Haryana and then were ousted from there by the Srnjaya Bharatas, like Sahadeva and Somaka. The eastern Kambojas if any must have belonged to the eastern Anava group of the Titikshu brancha In general The names of people and kings of the remote past should be related to the conditions of that period. If Prthu-Parthava is mentioned, and Madras and Kamboja, then we have a different community than the ones in the Shaka-Achaemenian period or Alexandrian-Bactrian period. Note I believe not only Bhargavas to have gone with the Anu Arya tribes into Afghanistan and Iran (as Shrikant Talageri said), but also Vasishtha groups. For, the white-robed Spitama priest to which Zarathushtra belonged resemble the Shvitan-cha Vasishthas in clothing. Also the Varuna cult was important among these Vasishthas, as well as the Bhargavas, both called V�runii. So the western Vasishthas were more conservative and remained Varuni, the middle Vasishthas were Aindra (a gotra name of the Vasishthas) and the eastern Vasishthas gradually became Raudra. The split between Anu and Puru Aryas was also between their priestly families as Shrikant Talageri rightly remarked: Anava had Bhargava, but according to me also Vasishthas around Asura Varuna the Medha or Wise One (both priestly families are V�runii). And the Puru-Bharata with their main priestly families Angira (especially of the Gautama branch) and Manyu (Manyu T�pasa is from the Aindra family of Vasishthas). |
