The word, according to my knowledge, doesn't mean peace at all. It means 'surrender' (and they mean surrender to God). It comes from to root salama (s-l-m) to surrender. The other word salaam means peace (which has also a taste of surrender, surrender to the kindness or hospitality of others?).

There's a danger in only obeying to God, but not to human beings. (especially when social customs and behaviour are concerned)
