my view:

Every artform in india started from the devotional context.

Sound is very special to Hindus, because it is Nada-Brahman: Sound is the Divine Expression of Brahman=God. A part of that Nada or first sound inside of man wants to be expressed. That goes naturally through sound. And sound is produced through the mouth. This is verbal expression. Here talking starts and singing is melodious and rhtymically talking.

Mudra or sound-image (of Nada)
The mouth expresses the "sound-image" verbally (direct). The body expresses the "sound-image" non-verbally (indirect). This sound-image = subtle Mudra or icon Mudra. When this icon Mudra is expressed by the hands then it becomes a handgesture Mudra.

When the subtle Mudra is expressed by the whole body. This is the base of dance.
