Dear VJR,

The way I look upon the principle Prakrti is far from passive. She is in a pre-creation stage of Nirguna Brahman potential, but in the Saguna she is pro-creation, thanks to the Purusha principle. Purusha is Chit, Prakrti is Sat and the (dis)balance between them as Jiivtman enjoys=is Ananda.

The words male, female and passive and active are relative words. No male person is only passive or active. A man has both principles of masculinity and feminity, though being biological a man. Even the chromosomes have this binary.
We can better look upon passive as potential and active as creating. And male and female have relatively to do with the biological plane with feedback to the psychological plane. Psychologically a man as representative of Shiva has an potential unaware or unmanifested Shakti. (When you come to homosexuality, there's another balance of Shiva-Shakti in a person. This is an indication that masculinity and feminity are no rigid words)
