The two great epics are centered around the revenge for the insults put on the two heroines.

Apala and Ghosha are a few of the older Vedic female Rshis. The challenge for the great Rshi Yajnavalkya came from Gargi as mentioned before. His wife Itara Katyayani was his main adviser in meta-philosophical matters, as was also Maitrayani.

Savitri's love and devotion for her husband is well-known.

Behind every great man, is an even greater (sacrificing)mother or wife. When the Ikshvaku dynasty had not an heir in the time of king Kalmashapada, the widowed queen Madayanti stood up and gave birth to king Ashmaka through the Niyoga system with Rishi Vasishtha. In that new dynasty was born generations later Shri Ramachandra Dasharathi.
This same happened later in the Kuru dynasty: When Vichitravirya died, queen-mother Satyavati, princess of Matsya desha, saved the dynasty by letting the queens Ambika and Ambalika have Niyoga with Krishna Vyasa Parasharya, also of the Vasishtha family.

These are some of the great women of India. I hope that the sacrificing part is done not exclusively by women.
