About the English 'day', Dutch 'dag' and German 'tag':

The cognate word in Sanskrit is very possibly from the root "dagh/dah". This word is in the nominative case (or Karttr) "dhak". According to some law no two consecutive consonants may have an aspirate, and thus "dagh" is changed into "dhag". According to a rule the voiced stop is changed into an unvoiced stop, thus "dhag" become "dhak".
The same case we have with "dugh/duh" in the nominative case becoming "dhuk".

We in reality get a glimse of the original word "dhagh" and "dhugh", which became lost, but was reatined in Sandhi and case variations.

I hope this may be of some help.
