Re: Lists of Upanishads [Re: VJR]

Hi VJR,

When I looked at the Salutation to Krshna text of the GoplaTpan Upanishad (published by Shivnanda) the first thing I noticed was this: The language is a form of (late) Epic and not Vedic Sanskrit, so more in tune with the language of the BhagavadGt and the Purnas as we have now. The work belongs probably to the Panchartra school of Bhakti thought, which is later than the Vednta period.
The older Upanishads were pre-historical-Krshna. The GoplaTpan is dated in the MiddleAges, some say even up to the 14th century AD.

There were 4 Tpanya Upanishads:
1. Nrsimha (prototype for the other)
2. Rma
3. Tripura
4. Gopla

The GoplaTpan is the Vaishnava variant of Advaita Vednta (more the personal devotional type), preserved by the Paippalda school of Gujarat, according to the Gaudya Sampradya. And thus claiming to belong to the Atharva Shkh, which isn't so, in my opinion, as the work belongs not to the Vedic period.

But I have to read the whole text to say more on this.
