Actually Christianity as well as Islam did have movements/currents which did deviate from the dogmatic main stream. Sufism, Darweshism (perhaps from the pre-Islamic 'Bhakti' mysticism of Persia, etc., connected with Indian Bhakti), , etc started as being heterodox, but some sects were soon to be incorporated more or less within the maincurrent.
Christianity had sects like the Kathars and other mystic groups that were soon annihilated by the clerical organisation.
It's a pity that such liberal movements weren't tolerated to exist on its own.
