Hmm, Willie, I'm not talking about the non-Muslim community raising their protests. I'm talking about the Muslim community, which though not being happy with the Al-Qaida, still not doing enough to silence them. What are you talking about Fatwahs not being binding and to look for another Imam being against that. The issue is that ANY Fatwah is a death penalty which will be followed by ANY lunatic to fulfill. This is the power of a Fatwah, which according to the believers is above any human law. And the Imams pronouncing them are not one of the most uninfluential ones! Another underestimation of you is the fact that the Al-Qaida is based in the top of Arabic countries, with the core in, yes, holy Saudi Arabia! May be you don't know that the Imams are very offessive in European countries, not to mention in the US, in their speeches, especially on fridays. The call for recruits and Jihad and the passive (silence) and active response to undermine laws is not really comforting. That's why secret services of European countries want to work better together to deal with this. Some governments are adapting their laws to deal with Islamic schools, etc. Turkey is one of the very few countries, as a member of the NATO (!), to deal with this. Kemal Ataturk divided state and religion, and introduced an European alphabet after the collapse of the Ottoman Empire. Turkey has this experience from those days, which most other Arab countries, freed from the Turkish, lack. The harsh military actions didn't stop the Imams to preach in Europe. The Muslims that are especially worried in their countries are especially the governments having friendly relations with the west, or are being in power due to suppressing their subjects. Really how influential are those Imams in Egypt to proclaim contra-Fatwahs? Egypt harbours a hard core of fundamentalists with militant factions (killing former president Anwar Sadat), being very close to Osama. I wonder where the idea came that the Islam is not organized or having a governing body. Their system is highly tested from the beginning of their military expansions till modern times. They only lack world domination since the Ottomans lost their power. Where the Jihadis try to revive the Khilafah with military means, the 'normal' organizations fulfill their penetrating missionary needs making use of the weaknesses in the law of the hosting countries. And there are many Islamic organizations in all kinds! Th damage done by just small groups is of course something one can deal with, but this movement is mondial. The mentality behind this agression is something unheard of before in global terms.The support is also massive. If so many million Muslims would raise their voice against this agression, there would be no recruits. But there are still plenty recruits. And huge amounts of money being invested to spread Islam. (But hardly any money to fight poverty, not even in their own fellow-Muslim countries, especially African ones) As long as this mentality isn't changed, there will be no real global balance let alone peace.
