The Agni-Pariksha and the whole last Kanda or section was not part of the original Valmikiya Ramayana. His stories ends when they returned home. The people were rejoicing, etc. End. The Epic grew in the period after Valmiki, thats why there came many interpolations and sections. Still your explanation of how to react, ether listen to the truth or bandon that for the sake of society is a very good one.
