Buddha lived in the time of the Ved�nta philosophy. In the Ved�nta emphasis was on realizing the god/divinity within yourself. So there wasn't an external god but rather the god within everyone that should be realized and reduced to sh�nya or nothing so that there's no urge to be reborn. That nothingness is nirv�na or nirbiija, the relative cause. The absolute cause is kaivalya/parabrahman or paranirv�na. So in Buddhism there's the Atman philosophy, but without an external god. In nirv�na everything is again Brahma-tva or Budhha-tva. That's the goal or starting point, But as the journey is actual, that's why Buddhism concentrated more on that part. Nirv�na is the result of working on the path.
