But then he's interpreting. Reinvention from the past doesn't necessarily mean failure nor does it mean success. It's just a chance. The past ca teach one lessons, but it' s up to you to do something with it. The way Willie is depicting the situation is a pessimistic view. That's interpretation. It's just a chance, and one has the opportunity to do something with it actively, in a determined way, or let the chance go by and live passively, and let others determin your chances. It's again up to YOU.
