Shaivism and Vaishnavism share many things in common, and are two expressions for the same, with their own nomenclature. Both have their Nirguna and Saguna way to help to bring Hindus in tune with Brahman. Both don't contradict each other and have sometimes just a slight different stress on that which is contemplated upon.

After giving some minor differences in the earlier posts, I would rather stress their overall agreement. This is why Hindus are never only Shaiva or only Vaishnava. They don't even think in those terms. They always stress themselves being just Hindus, nothing more.
