Hmm, Vinaire, there was one known as Chanakya. I don't know anything about others.
Chanakya was born as Vishnugupta and studied in the university of Takshashila, where many from Asia came to study. This is also the place where Panini the great grammarian had studied in earlier times.

Vishnugupta was called Chanakya or Kautilya because of his cunningness in politicology. When the Magadhan Empire suffered from king DhanaNanda, Vishnugupta trained Chandragupta Maurya to remove the tyrant. Vishnugupta was the kings right hand and helped him to become a stable emperor.
Chandragupta was as far as i know Hindu, like his Guru. His grandson AshokaVardhana became Buddhist.
