Hmm, such long posts, but with many errors. This is my comment on them: 1. Each Veda has three sections: Brahmanas, Aranyakas and Upanishads. Correction: Each Veda has FOUR sections: Samhit�, Br�hmana, Aaranyaka and Upanishad. (Only the Samhit�'s can be called Shruti). 2. Out of the 20 branches and 21 sub-branches of the Rg Veda, only three have survived today. Likewise out of 96 branches of Yajur Veda only two have survived the ravages of time. Correction: There is one official recension of the RigSamhit� named Sh�kalya. (There another, known from quotations named V�shkalya which didn't differ much). Of the YajurSamhit� FIVE recensions have survived of the Krshna version and TWO of the Shukla. By the way, where has the AtharvaSamhit� gone? Of that two recensions have survived. 3. The Vedas have been mainly concerned with the Pravritti Marga (the Path of Action). All the different branches of knowledge--physics, chemistry, botany, economics, music, etc.--are covered by the Vedas. These are concerned with the external world. Hence the Vedas have been considered dualistic. Only the Upanishads have taught the Nirvritti Marga (the Path of Knowledge) by going within oneself. Correction: Maybe SOV (as Vinaire calls him) doesn't know about the words Asat or Kham which are beyond dualism, and Aditi which is ParaBrahman. The Vedic people were above all concerned about Nivrtti, for which they had many ways, of which Rtam (order/regularity) in everything was one, Satyam (Reality) was another, Asu-ra or Pr�na (for the later Purusha) or Pradh�na (later Prakrti) were other means to make one to realize Asat or Aditi. (Aren't the N�sadiiya S�kta or AsyaV�masya S�kta, etc indications of the Nivrtti?) 4. While Veda is dualistic, Vedanta is Advaita (nondualistic). It is only when you understand the essence of the Vedas as expounded in the Upanishads and put into practice the message of the Vedanta, you will realize the true meaning of Advaita (Non-dualism). Correction: Since when does only the Upanishads contain the essence of the Vedas? The Upanishads do not contradict the Shruti. They only explain in other words the essence of the same older Shruti truth. The Upanishads were composed later in tim, and thus have a later form of Sanskrit and also a later form of Vedic culture. For a new situation a new wordpackage is used, but the essence is the same. The core of the Upanishadic Rishis are not from that period but from the end of the Mantra Period and the beginning of the Brahmana period (Vajasaneyi Yajnavalkya, Shandilya, Mahidasa Aitareya, Satyakama Jabala Aupamanyava, etc). Their teachings are based on repeating the older Rishis (Vyaghrapada, Parashara, etc) in a time of Vedic Revival during king Parikshit I Kauravya. Their teachings are remembered in the later works like the Upanishads! |
