My own understanding of Yajna is that it is the Creation (and Uncreation) Process. The Cosmic Yajna is Creation=Transformation. The Human Yajna is being one with that Cosmic Yajna (sacri-fice=making holy), and thus being united with his own creational aspect, the only way back to the origins.

Purusha makes a sacrifice: he creates the universe out of himself. This is a Yajna of the Divine. This is done so systematic that it's called Rtam or Order. Periodical Order is called Rtu.
The human Yajna is to get in tune with that Divine Yajna, to go back to the source. This can be done in many ways, and is called a ritual or a focussed attention to and fusion with the Divine Yajna tune. (Nda-Brahman).
Agni or Fire is the transforming power, to move from one aggregation to another. And that is very important in Yajna or Creation=Transformation. Fire is not only transforming, but as it facilitates the homeward path, as heatening, it is also Purifying = destroying solidification. The it uncreates.
But when Agni is holding back its heat, it creates.
